Auckland, This Day. Mr J. H. Gunson has agreed 1 to-accept nomination for Auckland mayoralty. The Horowheniua A', and P. iSooiety desire to acknowledge the gift of a hunting-crop from Mr A. Dempsey. The crop was set apart as a prize for the thread-the-needle race and was won by Mr H. O. Barnett. The third Napier wool salo opened yesterday afternoon. GENERAL GODLEY DENIES THE RUMOUR.

The Minister for Defence cabled to General Godley about "the reports that two New Zealanders had been murdered because they had insulted Egyptian women. Here is the cable message :— "Newpapers here report one New Zealander's throat cut in low quarter Cairo, about December 11, also second New Zealander stabbed to death for removing -woman's veil. Please cable confirmation or otherwise and names of victims." General Godley's reply was as follows, dated January 28th: "No shadow night and day to maintain a road unOur men are on the best terms with Egyptians."

In the STSI. Court, George "Boiinington, chemist, was charged with selling vinegar essence made from acetic acid and caramel without having it described as imitation, vinegar. He was also charged with selling food coloured with caramel. He was convicted without a fine in both cases. The prosecution said that the addition of caramel matte vinegar mistakable for the real article by the purchaser.
