NO SETTLEMENT OF AFTERNOON SHIFT TROUBLE.
Sydney, This Day. The afternoon shift conference failed. All the proposals of either side were rejected. The men's representatives after stating that Hie men had turned down the proprietors' proposals made at last conference, made suggestions for the abolition of the second shift in various mines within the next six to eighteen months. They also asked for ani extra 3d per ton after the first three months of the abolition of the shTE, and 10 per cent extra to all employees working second and third shifts. * The proprietors turned down these proposals, renewing their offer • f tsfe previous conference and in addition paying 3d per ton of picked) ton coal to the afternoon shift pay, and 2d per ton for machine-won coal. They placed the limitation ol the afternoon shift in various mines at three to five years. There were no proposals tor a further conference.
