A Magisterial inquiry, lasting two days, into tho circumstances attending the destruction by lire of a lancy goods and soft clrinJis snop, ruu by Richard Ridsdalo, is concluded. The jiagistrate'ss verdict found no evidence loiidered from which it could be reasonably inferred that either Airs or Miss Ridsdale intentionally caused the lire; that the insurance on stock tings (£850) greatly exceeded the value ai tho time of the fire; and that the stock and fittings insured five years ago were never re-inspected and re-valued on, behalf of the insurance company. A FiEW YEAR'S EVE RIOT. Gisborne, Jan. 26. A further batch of cases in connection with the New Year's Eve riot wheu a German pork butcher's shop was raided was heard to-diay. {several convictions with fines up toi £10 were recorded. The magistrate said the defendants could consider themselves lucky at not being charged with manslaughter seeing that there had been women and children in the butcher's premises at the time of the raid. A CARPENTER KILLED. Auckland, Jan. 26. Fatal injuries werje sustained , by James Porter, a carpenter in the employ of the New Zealand Government Railways, who fell from a signal post yesterday afternoon at Henderson. Another carpenter, named Thomas Anderson, had a narrow escape from a similar fate. The accident occurred through a shunting train one of the ropes which held in position the gear u«ed in erecting the signal psot, causing it to collapse. Anderson clung to the post, but Porter fell a distance of thirty feet, fracturing his right trigli and sustaining severe injuries '. > the spine. The injured man was conveyed by train to Auckland, but death occurred before Mount Eden station was reached. JOCKEY SERIOUSLY INJURED. Gisborne, Jan. Sβ. News was received in Gisborne tonight that I<\ O. Porter, the wellknown jockey, was seriously injured when riding Lady Oldwyn fh the Maiden Hack Scurry at the AVairoa races to-day. Porter was a well-known trainer, but went back to the pigskin last Nove'mber. He has showed up very prominently this season, riding several winners in the South Island. No hope is entertained lor his recovery though a Gisborno doctor has been sent for, for consultation. No details are available here as to how the accident occurred. TYPHOID CASES. Taihape, This Day. In reply to a Press Association report from Waiiganui aneuE that the typhoid cases being true, the local hospital reports that they have Uve cases, but only one of these is local. The other four are Ohakune patients.. The death reported was of an Ohakune patient. Duiring .November there was one case of typhoid at Taihape and one in December last year. The Health officer reports Taihape -clear of typhoid last month. It must be remembered that Taihape hospital cases cannot bo classed as referring to Taihape, as the local hospital deals with cases over an extensive area. It is the only hospital between Taumarunui, Waiiganui, and Palmerston. The hve new cases referred to come from Raetihi. ELECTROCUTED. Hokitika, This Day. Hugh McQuillam, an engine driver ae'the Ross Godfields mine, was killed instantaneously this morning, through coming in contact with a live elecfrfc wire when turning off the power. He leaves a wfclow and one young son.
