CORRESPONDENCE
[Our oorreepondents' opinions are thair own; the responsibility of editorial ones makes sufficient ballast for the editor's shoulders.l THE MAIRUA ROAD. (To the Editor.) Sir, —In your report of tho last meeting of the Levin Borough Council I was much surprised to read a statement made by the Mayor in the debate on the old main road to Fox ton, that it had been abandoned owing to influence. As far as I know the only influence was a report by Mr Morgan Carkeek, that it was a bad line and would be oxpensive to make—that :s the part northwards from Levin, and I believe that if tho Council mhiivte book is searched a resolution to that effect will be found.
The Heatherlea road 1 hacl been surveyed and the bush felled, and most likely influenced tho engineer in taking the main road whore it now is. We had a hard fight with the Chief Surveyor over the Avenue part as he wanted the road to run alongside the railway line to the Heatherlea crossing, and onfy gave way under great pressure. With regard to the title, i believe the Government hare not abandoned it, as only lately when the Bullei property was subdivided) the owners had to get a title to that parrt running through their property, very close to Mr J as. McLeavey's house. The report of the County Engineer shows that some parts of the old road would have to he abandoned and a new line taken through Mr J. R. McDonald's property, which would Tie costly, hence the suggestion that the land' should be acquired For closer settlement. —I am, etc. J. KEBBELL. Ohau, January 23, 1915.
