AUSTRALIA AND THE PANAMA
Melbourne, This Day. Tile dispute between Mr A. Deakin and the Minister for External Affaix-s continues. Tho hitter states that Mr Neilsen, an officer of the New South Wales Government, resident at San Francisco, warned Mr Deakin in August, that owing to the war, the Panama Exposition was shorn of its international character and: advised Australia's complete withdrawal. He further states that in an official memorandum submitted to him by Mr Deakin on Sept-ember 21st, there was no mention of Mr Neilsen's advice. It was on this memorandum that Mr H. Mahon induced Cabinet to approve of •Australia's representation at the Exposition on a modified scale. When ho discovered on December 24th that Mr Neilson's advice had been suppressed, Mr Mahon wrote to Mr Deakin. for an explanation, and advised the latter to defer his preparations for-departure. Mr Deakin replied that Mr Neilsen's advice was set aside by the Federal and State Commission. Mr Deakin also, on January 7th, wrote to Mr Mahon in reference to' the latter's accusation that Mr Neilsen's Tetter had been suppressed, saying that Mr Neilson never had been in close touch with the Commission in the same manner as his predecessor.
