A SAD ACCIDENT.
Ol'T THE HOKIO BEACH. » * A sad accident by which a girl named Phylis Chapman, a get I 12, tiio daughter ol' Mis It. Mottershead, oi Mako .Mako road, Levin, lost her 'il'o, occurred off the llokio Beach yesterday forenoon. A party consisting of Mr and Mrs T. Urounie and their daughter (aged 11), Mr and' Airs Carey, of •* Birkenhead, 'Auckland, and the deceased were bathing together when they , got into a holo which is so l'ar out tha it is only at low water that bathers got close to it. All managed to ** get out except the girl (Jhapinan, and seeing her in difficulties ALrs Broouio went to her rescue and got' hold of the girl, but became exhausted and % had to let go. Mr Broome then went iji and attempted to rescue the girl, but was soon. in such trouble that he ciame perilously near losing his own life. He was floating on the j. . water when Mr 11. Smith, of Levin, who was in the vicinity went in and biought hini ashore. It took about nil hour s work to bring him round. In the meantime the girl had disappeared, and tip to the present the body has not been found. Much sympathy will be lolt with the deceased's mother in her sad bereave- ' ment. Ihe police are patrolling the beaoli to-day on the look-out for the body. lhe place where the accident occuried is said to be the same as where a man namod Pacey lost hii'e eight or nine years ago.
