DEATH OF MR. JOHN HYNDMAN RUSSELL.
The death of Mr John Hyndman Russet! took place yesterday at his 'ate residence, Oxford-street, Levin, at the advanced age of 82 years. Deceased was born in Staffordshire, England, and emigrated to Australia, arriving on the Biillarat goldfields when they wore at their best. In 1860 Mr Russell arrived in Dunedin, and when gold was discovered at Gabriel's Gully took part in the rush there. After various experiences there he moved on to the West Coast and worked in the same mine as the late Mr R. J. Seddon. The two were close friends. In 1874 Mr Russell left the West Coast and arrived in Wellington, where he worked for tho late Mr J. E. Hayes, as foreman. He joined the defence force at the time of the Parihaka disturbance, and was present when the forces entered that place. 'In 1896 Mr Russell arrived in Levin. For some years he worked on the State Farm, Weraroa, and for the past few years had been living in retirement. Deceased leaves a family of seven— four daughters and three sons.
