A reminder is given to local devotees of Terpsichore that a social gathering and dance is to be held in Ohau Institute to-morrow (Tuesday). A good supper and good music are promised by the committee. The Ipswich by-election for the seat rendered vacant by the death of the Rev. Sylvester Home (Liberal) resulted in the return of Mr Ganzoni (Unionist) by a majority of 532. At the last general election a Liberal (Rev. Sylvester Home) was returned by a majority of 244. Levin Horticultural Society will hold its annual meeting in the Borough Council Chambers on Friday evening next. A report and balance-sheet will be submitted to the meeting, and officers will be elected for the ensuing twelve months.
This morning at the Levin Magistrate's Court, before Messrs B. R. Gardener and H. J. Richards, J.sP. a Maori named Patatai Kereona was fined £1 for the theft of a piece of saddle cloth from Bradley's stables a short while ago. He was also ordered to pay costs amounting to £1 13s. Mr W. S. Park appeared for the defence.
