Labor Department Report
The May number of the Labour Department's report is to hand. As it contains no reference to the Horowhenua County the report for Palmerston North (the nearest district) is given be- ' lojv (Palmerston North.) Twude has been very satisfactory., during tlje past month. Building operations have been going on all round, affording openings for a big share of outside labour. Several large buildings m course of erection and other s v in course of preparation make title,. outlook good for this class of lifibour for some time* to come. Building trades.—Bricklaying good. Carpentry and joinery very busy. Painting and plasterj ing good. Plumbing and pitting busy. Stonemasonry fair. Woodworking trades. —Boxmaking slack. Cabmetmaking and upholstering busy. Coopering slack. Sash and door factor, ies, sawmilling and wood-turning etc., fair. Engineering trades (all branches). —Not very busy. Leather trades.—Bootmaking (repair shops), good. Saddlery and harnessmaking fair. Clothing trades.—Dressmaking and millinery very busy; dressmakers wanted. Tailoring (order) normal. Retail trades.—Clothing, boots, drapery, groceries, etc, very good. Printing trades.—Bookbinding and printing busy.
