SOUTHKIiff MAItKETS

I i'Klt i'RWSS JUiSnetATION.! Christchureh, May 19

There is nothing fresh to report in connection with the wheat market, which is firm, but with little business doing. There is a development in tho oat market, which is hardly likely to have any appreciable effect upon local prices, but will relieve to some ex- | tent the stocks now held by merj chants. This is the opening up of export trade to West of Engj land ports. The Westmeath will take away some thousands of sacks, and it is hoped to get away a larger quantity next month. Freight by this month's boat is 27s lid per ton, and 'for next month it will be 255. It is not considered that there will be any profit at present prices in the export trade to the United Kingdom but it will form an outlet for stocks. New Zealand oats are (jnoted at 2s fid per bushel in London, so that when all charges are paid they will net considerably less than 2s per bushel. Canadian and Argentine oats are quoted at much lower prices than New Zealand grown. The potato market is quiet, and buyers are not inclined to do business at £3 per ton at country stations, the Auckland market being heavily supplied at the present time. Cow grass-seed has declined m price in consequence of the low quotations that are being received from London. WELLINGTON MARKETS.
