The previous year, however, contaiued an expenditure of £85 for Princess street extension, which lessens the ordinary expenditure for that year. During the past year some 12£ chains of curb aud channel work have been done and about 22
chains of new work in tarring and sanding have been done on the -footpaths in Oxford and Queen r streets. The expenditure for general Upkeep .of the roads is doubtless a large one, but with the" ; advent of crushed metal the main
roads at least are steadily im- ; proving, and the heavy wear and .jtear caiiscd by present day motor ■■■^•traffic'"is to some extent, coped with.. In the opinion, of many, liowever, the best results from the crushed metal will never be obitaineduntil a steam road roller is .'engaged for road construction. "The experiment tried last year .'}. of tarring the sides of the main / streets, whereon formerly grass I tin (I weeds abounded, has been successful. The use of tar ,in this respect has proved clean .lincl on the whole economical, and
> has addejil considerably to the tidy -appearance of the town and has saved a good deal of labour." .
