Dunedin, ihie Day. Two engines collided in the i railway yards last night at about I eleven o'clock. One, travelling j backwards, was going to the j sheds, the other, moving ahead, ! was going to the platform. The tender of the first engine hit the corner of the second, which was a small one, crushing the tender in against the firebox and boiler, and terribly mutilating the fireman (David Donovan) who must have been killed instantly. _ The driver escaped injury. It is not clear how the accident happened. Both engines ~ carried lights. Donovan was a married man, with one young child. MOTOR CYCLIST'S DEATH. Christchurch, This Day. Last night a motor cyclist nam. Ed Mark Ishcrwood was found dead on the road near Darfield. There was no trace of any accident, and it is surmised that death was due to a fit. •SOUTHERN MARKETS. The wheat market remains quiet, but firm, especially for Hunter's and Pearl, there not being quite so much inquiry -for Tuscan. There is very little grain offering, and sales are few at present. There is no change in the oats market, the tendency, howeVer, being rather weaker, though prices remain without alteration. Malting barley is very I dull of sale, there being no demand whatever at present, and it is difficult to say what the real value is. The potato market has further weakened. Buyers are now giving only c £3 at country stations and they are now keen t'o make purchases, even at that figure, though a good deal of business has been done during the week on that basis. CHARGE OF MURDER. Christchurch, May .15. Harry Cripps was brought before the Magistrate's Court at Lyttclton this morning, charged, on remand, with murdering Adam Stevenson at Geraldine on April 23. Senior-Sergeant Ryan applied for a remand (which was granted) until 9.30 a.m. on May 20, at Geraldine.
