HOCKEY
\esterday was a day of hockey in Levin, three matches beingplayed on the recreation ground. The finest match, and one that ri'jsed keen interest and excitement, was that played between the Shannon Ladies' team and Tainu) Ladies' team. The teams appeared to be well matched, though Shannon had the best of the play in the first half and scored two goals to Tainui's nothing. In Ihe second half Tainui considered ihe time ripe and started a strong | attack on Shannon. Now and again Shannon pushed them aside but like last month T s bills Tainui turned up again with interest added to their vigour, and in a few minutes Miss Dolly Arataka scored Tainui's first goal. As Tainui renewed their attentions, after the bully-off the hopes and yells of their barrackers rose, and Miss Dolly scored Tainui's second goal they cheered and took kangaroo leaps up and down the line. Both teams were even now 111 scorns, but Tainui again took advantage by attacking, and their "star" player scored a third goal for them. (More wild cheers and kangaroo leaps). The pace told on the Tainui team, or else they felt satisfied, lor they attacked no more, leaving that pari to Shannon, and for the i-est of the game play was in lainui's half. Shannon, however. was unable to score, and the f »ame ended: Tainui S goals, Shannon 2. Miss Pedersen and I
Miss Thompson scored the goals or Shannon. Mr If. Judd was
•eferee. Alongside the above match
l.evin Magpies (alias B) met "Y .M.O.A. team, or rather portion of it. !N T o one took much
notice of them, even the line umpire could not resist the attraction behind him and part of the lime was watching tlie ladies play. If the men want to attract the public with their game they will have to dress it in much more attractive style. Y.M.C.A. were badly beaten, the Magpies pecking holes in their defence with great vigour, and scored 8 goals. Smart ('»'). H. McDonald (I), and McJ)< rmott (1) scored for the Magpies. No one scored for Y.M.C.A., who played three men short. At first call on the Y.M.C.A. team this season not sufficient players turned up to play at all, and yesterday it was hardly worth while playing. Under the same circumstances a Japanese hockey club would feel that honour_ demanded noth'ing less than liarikari. Mr TV. BrougEton was referee.
Oil Ihc outside, ground Oliau Ladios team mot and defeated Koxton by H goals to I. Miss King soured Foxton's goal. For Oliau, Mrs Ropata (H), Pa rewai AVohipei'hnnn (1), Mrs Wilson (1) and Maraia Pereaura made up the total. Mr A. Dixon was referee. Levin Ladies journeyed to Otaki, and loat their gain© by 3 goals to 0.
Levin Men's A team drew with Shannon, at Shannon, 2 goals each. For Levin T. Tuoliy and (t. Winter scored goals, and J. Martin scored the goals for Shan-
non. It was a good game, there noi being much difference in the teams. Mr EastEer was referee.
