liurul telephones for llorowhenua County arc being discussed today by tlie epccial committee- of Horowheuua County Council that was set up to investigate' the proposals of Levin Chamber of Commerce. It is intended to make a report to the county council to-day. At. last evening's meeting of the Horowhenua Fruitgrowers' Association Mr I). Smart stated that last month he had sold 30 large cases and 26 half cases on behalf of one grower. This sliows the possibilities ahead. Hutchinson's "History -of the Nations," sumptuously illustrated, is now on sale at Mr J. W. Thompson's, Levin. Tin's work was produced at a cost of f;}(),()00. and is illustrated with about 2500 pictures. H maybe obtained in ninepenny parts. Some of the apples exhibited at l lie Levin Chrysanthemum Show lasl week by Mr '1. Horton, nurseryman, of liawke's J Jay, are now on view in Mr 1). Smart's window, Oxford street. Several of iho new varieties evolved by Mr 11. Newport are also exhibited. At. the- April meeting of the llorowhenua Fruitgrowers' Association, Regulation S caused much discussion, and the discussion was carried on again last evening, at the Association's last meeting. Finally the- regulation was thrown out, the opinion being expressed that growers would soon find that it would pay them better to sell through the association than hawk it round themselves. Motor hogs will be interested in the following letter, read to-day at the meeting of llorowhenua County Council. "The County Clork, Levin. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of2oth April relative io reckless driving of motor cars and motor cycles, and to inform you instructions have been issued to the police to pay particular attention to the speed and regulation of motor traffic. C. W. Hcndry, for Superintendent of Police." "It is now nearly two years since we received any subsidy from you !" This pathetic reminder was sent to the Horowlienua County Council to-day by the Shannon Public. Library Committee. The committee further pointed out that it had spent £4 in improvements during the past twelve mouths and concluded by asking for a subsiry. The council will consider the application this afternoon, and its decision will be recorded in Monday's Chronicle. On Thursday evening the Arapae-pae Bible Class y uve-. a welcome to the- Rev. \V. 11'. E. Abbey. Though the night was wet and a number of people journeyed'to Ko. putaroa to tako part in the school committee election held there, there was a good attendance, about fifty being present.
