GUMDIGGERS' WINE
Auckland, May 7. The police to-day visited Waitakere ranges, 20 miles from the city, and raided the house of a man suspected of soiling wine to the gumdiggera. In a shed they discovered 250 gallons of wine, which they carted to the railway station, the cases filling a truck. Metcalfe, the owner of Fhe house, will be charged with selling liquor without a license. DAMAGES AWARDED. Auckland, May 7. In tho Supreme Court, Mr Justice Cooper gave his decision on a motion for a new trial in the case John Snowdon againet tho Waitomo County Council, in which the jury awarded plaintiff £''500 damages for injuries, hi.s left hand having been shattered by detonators found nenr an abandoned forge. Tho jury held that plaintiffs injuries wore duo to carelessness on the part of the council's workmen. Plaintiff, a boy, 11 yearn of age, was playing with other boys near the abandoned forge upon unfonred lnnd, about a eh ain from the* main road. His Honour commented severely on the grosH negligence on fhe part of both Government and Tounty Council workmen in leaving detonators loosely about. TTe dismissed the mofion for a retrial, with costs.
