PUNITIVE EXPEDITION. The Pacifique brought new r s of the landing of a punitive expedition at Malekula by the French gunboat Kersaint to punish the Big Nanibus tribe, for attacking the crew of the recruiting steamer Guadelope, when three of the crew were killed and eaten. The arrival of the Kersaint created a panic and the natives fled to the interior, leaving three- sick behind. One confessed that he took part in the murder of the Guadelope's men. He was gaoled.
