SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELEC-
TIONS. Carterton, This Day
At the election of the school committee ail the candidates were asked their attitude towards the 13ible-in-Schools movement. All declared themselves against it. The following were elected: Messrs J . G. Moor (chairman), 11. J. Chapman (secretary and treasurer), J. Harp, J. McNicholls, W. G. Ellie, A. (J. Riggs, J. McJLenzie, J. Stevens, W. Reid. The following resolution was passed : e "TEat this representative meeting of householders, being satisfied with the present free secular compulsory education obtaining in the dominion, hereby pledges ltselt to resist any interference therewith, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Minister for Education." This was carried with applause, there being , one dissen-tient---a Salvationist.
The Belvedere meeting carried a similar resolution. The committee elected were: Messrs E. Eale, junr. (chairman), C. J. Delaoey (secretary and treasurer), J. Steven, J. Sage, W. Earl and J. Shanks.
On Wednesday the YJi.C.A. hockey team failed to put in an appearance against Shannon, and it is said that they are. withdrawing altogether from the contests. The YVeraroa Maoris are now considering the possibility of forming a team. The meeting called for last night by the Levin Cricket Club, lor the purpose of arranging'a "wind-up" social," was poorly attended. Only three enthusiasts turned up at the meeting place (the Levin Hotel) consequently nothing was done. Sugar for sweetness, sardines for suavity, and clothing for warmth and adornment. These were the levies placed upon Levm tradesmen some weeks ago by a thief who came in the night. The sugar and sardines wore stolen on or about the Ist May, from Messrs Dean and Rawson and .J. VV. Gibson, respectively: the clothing (on 21 s< April) from a traveller representing Maekay, Logan and Caldwell, Ltd. The police have been investigating ever since, and on Thursday "hist Constable Bagrie arrested a yoiintf man on suspicion of being the culpit. He is an express driver, by name Albert Arthur Hoskiiis.
