For the month ended April 2fith the gas manager reported to the Levin Borough Council last evening that matters in connection with the department showed a steady forward movement. During the month ended several new connections were made, and a good quantity of gas fitting done. Sev. ernl applications were received from others for a gas supply, including several gas cookers, and this work was being pushed forward as fast as possible. Two "youthful jokers" who had been working for some weeks in the back country were in Opunake recently, and being attracted by the good looks of a young lady refrained from strolling past Holmes and Arthur's shop. They watched slyly and shyly for some time and then plucked up courage and smiled at the young lady, then crossed the road and blushingly approached the well-dressed and good-looking "tart" and found it was a draper's model. The young fellows have gone hack to their work in the country.- Opunake Times. The official figures for the Papanui Egg Test extended over two years have been received by Mr 11. A red bob-tail cow found fame through a discussion by the Levin Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The bob-tailed cow aforesaid was found loitering on the public* roadway, and was promptly impounded by the ranger. No owner appeared to claim the animal, and she was sold for the sum of £5, her purchaser being the baker who once cleared the pound fence at one leap, with an irate cow behind him. News of the sale of the bob-tailed bovine reached the ears of the Levin Meat Company, and considering that the description answered to the likeness of one of the company's cows, the company sent in a claim to the council for the sum of £5, less ihc expenses incurred by the council (£1 19s fid) for the comfort of the bob-tailed animal during the time she was in the council's hands. The matter was left to the mayor and- the town clerk to deal with. An experiment on potatoes was conducted at the Grafton State Farm to test the production from seed of various sizes, and both cut and whole. The report states: "An analysis of the result reveals, in a striking manner, the superiority of the large tubers, whether cut. or uncut, over the smaller tubers for seed purposes. Although'large whole' and 'large cut' once longitudinally each show a slightly increased yield over large tubers 2in to 3in in diameter, cut four times, the latter is undoubtedly the most economical set to employ in planting. The much greater quantity of seed required per acre in the former does not compensate for the small increase of yield, in view of the high prices for seed." For instance, large whole seed was planted at the rate of 28cwt to the acre, and large potatoes, cut four times, at the rate of 7 cwt. per acre. A puzzled territorial at the K.owai camp made some funny comments on comfort in ine field to a Christchurch Sun reporter the other day: "When I couldn't get not bin' for me tea last night and was sqtiealin' a bit, 1 was told I couldn't expect to be waited on like I was in an hotel. And then I goes to headquarters and blow me if they haven't all got beds and carpets and stoves and all that.
