MAYOIUL ELECTIONS

Carterton, This Day

In the mayoral election, Mr F. Feist, the sitting mayor, polled 177 and Mr M. D. Horiisby 508. AVoodville, This Day. For the mayorality, Mr Home secured 271 votes and Mr Redwood 240. Taumaranui, This Day. Mr E. W. Simmons was elected Mayor. "CLOSE It SETTLEMENT WANTED. Pongaroa, This Day. A deputation asked tne Hon. W. Fraser that land bo thrown open for closer settlement with particular reference to Burling'e estate, situated near Pongaroa township, and declared that there was a great demand tor workers' homes. The Minister said that the Prime Minister's object was to promote close settlement and smaller areas, and that was the feeling of the whole Cabinet. He would place their representations before the Minister of Lands, and lie. felt sure that the latter would obtain a full report on the subject. The Hon. Mr Fraser said there could be no general prosperity unless tho land was held in smaller areas in a reasonable way, thus increasing the population and assisting the railway revenue. Every effort should be made in that direction. He would also tell the Prime Minister his (the Hon. Mr Eraser's) views on tho matter.
