EVENTS IN SHANNON

FARMERS' UNION

The annual meeting of the Farmers' Union was held in the Druids' Hall on Tuesday evening. Mr Law, senior, presided, and there was a good attendance of members present. Mr Saunders gave a report of the meeting held in Palmerston North, in reference to the trade at the Port of London. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, on the motion of the chairman, secsnded by Mr Robinson. The secretary's report and balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £5 19s lOd. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, as read. Mr Stephenson suggested that the union might obtain the use of the Mechanics' Institute for their meetings, and the matter was left in his hands to arrange, if possible. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—CKairaian, Mr E. Law: vice-chairman, Mr A. Saunders; secretary, Mr W. T. Law: auditor, Mr C. B. Robinson : committee, Messrs Mitchell, Robinson, Taylor, Lin sell, Stephenson, and Venn. Mr E. Law was appointed delegate to the conference to be held m Wanganui on May 2fitTi n«xt. TF was resolved that the Government be asked to reduce the rate of freight on all fencing timber, as timber is getting very scarce on this coast. Tin's concluded the business, an.l the meeting adiourned. Messrs Moynihan and Venn sent apologies for absence. CRICKET. A meeting of the Shannon Cricket- Club was held at the Albion Hotel on Thursday night, to wind up the affairs of the season, anl settle certain matters in connection with insurance. The club has held its own very well during the past season, and retains the Hugh Hall Shield for anothei 1 year. Financially it has come i.ut with a small balance to credit, and the officers of the club desire to thank the public for the support received. The following are the winners of trophies: Mr Murdoch's trophy (a bat for the batting averages in cup matches'! Mr E. Butterworth; Mr Davis's trophy (a bat for the best howling average in all matches) Mr W. Tremewan; Mr Murray's trophy, for the best batting average in all matches, Mr W. Tremewan.
