EVENTS IN SHANNON

B() WLING AND TENNIS
I riendly games were played on the tennis courts and the bowling green on Wednesday aftoriioou. Eargher, Lind and Bromley (skip) mot Gardiner, Venn, and Knowles (skip). Bromley's men scored 25 to Knowles's men's 11.
The annual meeting of householders for the election of a school committee takes place at the school on May Tth.
An extraordinary consignment arrived by train on Thursday morning. Ten young deer, sent by the Acclimatisation Society, to be set free on the hills near Shannon. They were in charge of one of the society's officials. Mr Tremewan met them at the railway station, and the deer were taken out to the hills by way of the east road. The contract for the erection of the Bank of New Zealand has been let to .T .Ilarvey and t 0., Levin, tor £1955. Tlie building will be a handsome addition to our progressive township. The Ladies' Hockey Club had •' practice match on the recreation reserve on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Pringle is making good progress with his contract for the erection of additions to tlie public school. The master's house is also being renovated—a much needed work, which no doubt Mr Voysey will appreciate. Some of the piles in the back portion of the building were found to be completely rotted away.
A return match has been arranged between the Shannon and Levin Hockey Clubs—to be played at Shannon next Wednesday. As the championship games begin on May Gth, it is to be hopeci that all hockey players will turn out next Wednesday so as to get into good form.
As Mr Eggleton's traction and com bine were crossing the Craw bridge about 4.J-J0 p.m. on Wednesday, the bridge gave way, and the engine sank into the creek. Fortunately no one was hurl, but the delay was considerable, as the journey northward could not be resumed till between 12 and 1 o'clock on Thursday afternoon.
Our Shannon correspondent was in search of news the other day. He would be much obliged if any of Li is sporting friends would give him any informa/tion. In the 11 lean time he sends the following which he picked up years ago in I lie course of his raniblings :— THE WIFE FOUND IT. A Welsh grocer' complaint to a wholesale firm :—"Sir, for you not send soap wich 1 order? Is not my money as good as good as no man's? Condemn you, why you not send soap? Your truly servant, etc. I\S.—Since 1 write the above my wife have found the soap under the counter."
Residents of Shannon have a -trong inducement to buy their drapery, clothing and boots locally when they have a stock like Fnrgher and Co.'s to select from. V good assortment of well bought voods, at a fair and reasonable ;, ric(\ makes good every time. - Advt.
