EVENTS IN SHANNON
(By our Resident Representative). FIRE AT TOKOMAIIU. The peaceful repose of Tokomaru was rudely disturbed on Saturday morning by the destruction by fire of Mr Gregg's fiaxmill and scrutching shed, known as the Temukanui Mill. Between 5 and 5.30 a.m. the foreman was roused *by the whistle of a passing tram and awoke to find the mill in a -. blaze. The fire had such a hold "on the building that it was impossible to say where or how it had originated. Nothing could be done to save the place, and the r Temukanui Mill was soon a mass of smoking ruins. Mr Gregg . values the buildings and plant desiroyed at £2858. He is insured for £1100 in the Guardian Insurance Co., so that the disaster lands him in a loss of over £'1500. * FOOTBALL. There was a football match on the recreation reserve on Saturday afternoon between the lownies and th Farmers. McLelland cap- , tained the Townies, and Willie Moynihan the Farmers. For the former, Buckiuan, A. Dalziell and O'Regan played well, Dalziell be- \ ing conspicuous in the forwards, : and O'Regan in scoring. For the Farmers Spring, Simpson and Butler, with W. Moynihan, mostly distinguished themselves by their good play. The result was rT drawn game, each side scoring lti points. Mr Maloney's weekly assembly, •* last Friday night at the Druids' Hall, was one of the most enjoyable and successful that has been held here. There were about 40 • couples dancing, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mrs Butler was an efficient pianist, and extra waltzes were played by Miss Curran, Mr Bovis, 31 rs Kirkland, ;Hid the Misses Gray. Mr Quarne acted as M.C. Mr Hooper, of •Foxton, and the Misses Gray conT tributed to the enjoyment of the , evening by their singing. An . excellent supper was provided. The present cold days arc cre- ' ating a demand for coals. Ladies will find a splendid range of cosy, stylish coats at Fargher and Go's.
