The annual meeting oi the subscribers to the .Shannon public library was hold in* the .Mechanics' institute) on Tuesday evening. 1 here was a small attendance Mr T. Lind presided, and read the following statement: The library lias been housed in this buildin i> , It)] - two years now, and its central position is beginning to be recognised by the reading public. Tlic subscribers have- increased from 20 to 47, or nearly doubled themselves, and during tfie ensuing year I hope they will double themselves again. During tlio past year we have had a catalogue published which, I think, has been I a boon <u country subscribers esj peeially. [ should like to thank all those who kindly advertised in Ihe catalogue .thereby making it possible to publish the same without drawing on (ho funds of the library. During the past year we have added 120 volumes to the iibrary in addition to r. few books donated by Mrs Gunning and Messrs Engles, Dcnton and Durham. The Government subsidy on the library's earnings for the last twelve months is to hand, amounting to £0 7s Bd, but the same- does not appear in the balance-sheet. The librarian, Mrs Sparks, had fulfilled her duties very satisfactorily. The balance-sheet show--.■l that tlie receipts for the past vear were £-15 5s -Id, expendituie £•'lO 8s 2d ; balances to credit, £<J 17s 2d. The balance-sheet had been puly audited by the honorary auditor, Mr T. H. fi. Tilling. The report, and balance-sheet were adopted. In accordance with the suggestion of the auditor, it was resolved (hat the library's financial year should end on December :»lst for the future, and that the officers elected that night should only hold office for nine months, and the annual meeting be held on the second Monday in January. The following \fere elected n committee for the ensuing 9 months: '!(ssi's Mitchell, Gardiner, f'layton, Lind, Farghcr. and Exall, with Messrs Venn and Stephen son (County Council members) as officers. Mr Lind gave notice to move- at the next annual meeting: That the number of committee-men be reluccd to five. Mr Lind proposed, and Mr Venn seconded, a hearty vote of approbation of the services of the secretary (Mr C. H. Gardiner). This was carried unanimously. Mr ,T. IT. ft. Tilling'was elected auditor. Mr Lind ro-elc-eted chairman and Mr 0. H. Gardiner secretary and treasurer of the committee, mid Mrs -Sparks caretaker of the buildings and custodian of ilie library.

FCTNEIIAL. The funeral of the late Mr K. 15. Stephen son took place on Wednesday afternoon, and was largvly attended. The cortege left Mr (.!. X. Stephen son's residence at Huckley shortly after 2 rj.m., and proceeded along , the JJuckley road Io tho A'en Bedo's Church. Shortl\- before the church was reached the funeral procession was met by ibe Druids, who had mustered iliirty strong , to pay a last tribute nf respect to their deceased brother. They marched as a vanguard to the church, and lined up on either side of the entrance, while four Druids bore the coffin from the hearse to the church. Here the l\ev. C. Palmer began the beautiful funeral service of the church. Psalm xxxix was read, 'hen the Vicar read part of the- 15th Clijipter of St. Paul's lirst epistle to the Coiinthians descriptive of the triumph of Christ and his followers over death. Hymn ">4O A. and M. was sung" without accompaniinnt, and then at Mi- Palmer's invitation all present knelt in silent prayer. The procession was then reformed ami journeyed to the cemetery where tho burial service was conducted and the remains of one of the best men Shannon has known laid in ileir last resting; place. At tjlie conclusion of the Church service Urn. T. 11. E. .Tilling, A.D., read tho Funeral service of the Druids. Many beautiful wreaths were placed on the coffin as tokens of the love and csieoem in which the deceased was held by all who know him.

A very pleasant slathering in connection with the Good Tempi ars' Lodge was hold on Monday evening. The C. T. Key. J. Crawford presided. The object of the meeting , was to say farewell to Mr .IJroadbelt, who is leaving , (ho district for Auckland. Mr Crawford presented Mr BroadbeK with a handsome pair of brushes as a token of esleem from tho members of the lodge. Mr liroadbelt suitably acknowledged the gift. Tlie ; Kev. T. A. Mclven/.ie, Messrs F.sall and Petersen each spoke a " words of farewell. .Miss Annie Butt sang and Mr Uxall gam a reading.
