Manakau Notes.

A general meeting oi the Literary and Debating Society was held on Monday night. .Mr M-Bain was in the chair. The report aid balance-sheet of last s .;e.i'S!on was read and approved. ' .Major Tatum was again elected patron, Mr L. Atkins president, and Messrs Andrew* and A. Askew vice-presidents. Mr A. Atkins was again elected secretary and treasurer, while the managementcommit tee consists of Messrs Kirkly, K. Askew and Stupples. The first meeting of the society will be held on Wednesday, 10th of April, when Mr Mcßain will talk about '"The Maoris of Past Ages.' The following motion was proposed by Mr Andrew, and carried unanimously: "That this meeting of the Manakau Debating Society present to Mr Mcßain the freedom of the Society." Eighteen members were present, and it is hoped that the membership will be raised to forty. A Jiiiai-ji earthquake was felthere on Monday night. Everyone one met next morning said : "Eeel the shocks" and it is said that several residents collared a candle or lamp and went out to examine their chimney stacks. A large- stingray was caught on the Otaki Beach on Sunday. One young sport, armed with a long stick, went to give it a prod, when the stick broke, and he fell light across the stingray. The onlookers sav ho let out a fearful yell and started for mother and safety at about a mile a minute.
