A visii w;r; paid 1.0 -Mr Klein's farm by your representative oil Sunday to inspect a crop of lucerne, which has been sown under the Agricultural Department's direction. The area (half an acre) was planted on tthe (ith February, 1914. 'lhe Department supplied the inoculated soil and seed an.l Mr Klein undertook to get the land in good order. Considering that the lucerne has bpen only sown six weeks, the growth is phenomenal. The roots vwere found to have entered the ground !<» the depth of' four inches, vhilc above the ground the lucerne is showing a uniform heighl of seven inches. 'lhe inoculated soil was sown broad-cast with seed and then lightly harrowed in. It, can j)e readily seen that luceTiie is the jodder for dain'farmer to grow, lhe roots enter deep into the soil, and therefore do not take all of lhe goodness olf the surface crust, iaicerne enriches the soil, and what will appeal to farmers most, ii is a tremendous cropper, and can be cut at least five times a year. A large bush fire was seen at the back of South M anakau on Monday. Owing to the wet season, the growth of young underscrub is very bad.
