Sailing Race.
UN LAKE HOKOWHENUA
The race for Mr H. B. France - trophy was sailed on Saturday afternoon. The , starters were ■■Shim" (H. Butler, W. Wow), ■•Orwell ,, (F. Haste), "Seini' (H. Dean). The boats started together, and there were no handicaps. The wind was fresh and gusty from the south, making tTio handling n. the light centre-board boats a ticklish job. All the boots carried full sail. The run downjn the north buoy was done in quirk time: the "Shira" was first round, IV.I lowed by the "Orwell" aim "Seiiii." , Going too far insidthe next mark, the "Scini" took the ground, and owing to the skipper having conscientious scruple: about using an oar in a sailing race, she was there long enough lo give the oilier boats a good lead. The "Orwell," which sailed wi-J'i in (he strong breeze, had a good lead the second time round, nm. looked like winning, when a strong u-ust of wind carried, away her mast. Tt snapped off close to Hie deck, and mnst, sails and rigging went over the lee side. THc race now was between the "Shira" and "Seini," and with two rounds lo go the "Shira" had a good lead, and was apparently an easy win.ner But the "Seini,' which was well handled by Mr Dean, gradually crept up, and Avon by a I.
