The Chronicle PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN. THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 1914 RURAL TELEPHONES.
The late-born ambition oi' Otaki to be the central .telephone bureau for a district extending I nun Shannon to Waikanae some 40 miles, is perched on a pinnacle that has no base. The Otaki promulgators of" tLis idea have floated it in a Wellington newspaper, but they have omitted the more essential flotation of a subscription list amongst their business people to "raise a sum of from £00 to £100 that would be required to allow of the exhaustive canvass of so wide a district to secure the necessary guarantees by the scattered settlers. "O'er weening ambition that o'erloaps itself" is well shown in this instance. If Otaki is wise it will set to work on a moderate scale, and organise a local scheme for .Te Horo and Otaki districts leaving Manakau to come in with Levin and Oliau, while Shannon doubtless will organise a scheme for itself later, as will Waikanae in due course. 7 here can be no general grand scheme: each district will be self-contained in accordance with local and business needs, natural restriction of boundaries, and so fortli. If (he County Councillors keep (his point clearly in view, when (lie deputation approaches it to-morrow their will be avoided one of the Great's! pitfalls at present apparent in connection with flic scheme. It should be remembered, further. tha( Levin's scheme for Ohau.' Manakau and Wirokino riding is a concrete one, witTi guarantees of settlers' signatures. scheme, per contra, is on paper, and likely to remain there.
