Information has been received that the Now Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Opawa arrived in London on January 22 with the volunteer firemen all well. The, men worked splendidly during the voyage, and will be given a free passage back to New Zealand when disposed to return. TANNERY BURNED. tnvercargill, This Day. William Camtlioine's tannery at West Plains, was destroyed by fire on Sunday. It was insured in the Standard Company foi ' £3000, the amount being very largely re-insured. The loss is estimated at £1000 above this. TEN DAYS , DET ENTITY. Dargaville, This Day. Two Maoris, -John Apahene and John Matthews, who were fined at the S'.M. Court on the 15th February for non-attendance at military training, were arrested on Saturday and taken to Auckland, to serve ten days' military detention. FIRE ON THE STORMBIRB. Wanganui, This Day. When the hatches were removed from the steamer Stormbird this morning, preparatory to unloading, a fire was discovered. Two cases of hospital supplies were alight, but soon extinguished. The damage by water and fire is about £20. Had the fire broken out at sea the consequences might have been very serious.
A JUDGE'S COMMENT. Christchurch, This Day. In sentencing Frank Marton to four years' reformative treatment for indecent acts, Mr Justice Denniston said they have more than once commented on the senseless prudery which leaves children without warning on these points. TKe offences were the result of evil habits acquired in youth. No sensible man would willingly entrust a complicated piece of machinery to an ignorant mechanic. But parents and teachers consent to leave children wftliouf a knowledge of that marvellous machine —the human body. A RETRIAL. Wellington, This Day. At the Supreme Court, on the application of Mr C. P. Skerrett, Mr Justice Hosting made an order for a retrial during the present session of the New Zealand Times v. Dominion libel case.
