Shakespeare in Levin.

A striking success was achieved by the Horowhenua Boating Club .with its dramatic and vocal concert -Levin last night. The provSramiue was arranged by Mr Byron Biown, all the contributors" being Otaki people. It «tta* put on the boards entirely expense to tlie Boating , ChiK and in this connection, Mr Liny Marriott, an official of the club, made the club's, acknowledgments to Mr Brown for his ' very helpful servjees. The dramatic scenes were Shakespearian, - and interpreted by such capable exponents as Mr and Miss Brown they proved to be entertaining and instructive to all the audience. Miss Brown's most dramatic number was that iu which she gave Juliet's, monologue before she takes the potion provided for her by the friar. The horror of the girl at the imminence of her living immurement in the mausoleum of the Capulcts was expressed with wonderful vraisemblance. Mr Brown's facial and tonal expressions in "Hotspur's ' Defence" were exceedingly well (lone, but his best item was his interpretation of "Ealstaff's" Soliliquy on Honour. In figure and build he is the very antithesis of Shakespeare's quaint old coward, but he nevertheless gave an excellent presentment of the cynical old humorist whose cowardice always was "half-atoned for by its openness and unblushingness. A performer new to Levin was Miss Hazel Jeffery. She was heard in a series of recitations that *ranged from Shakespeare to Buchanan- / which is equivalent to saying f from parapet to cellar. Her best piece was "The-Three Fishers." Charles Ivingleys' wonderfully fine poem on the mutability of workers' lives. Miss Quill's pianoforte solos were characterised by daintiness of touch and good technique. Several vocal numbers were given by Mrs R. D'Ath, whose voice is of a pleasing quality. In "My Rosary" she was heard to special advantage. ■• > panied by Miss Quill (m;; ■■ .) and Miss Remington ('cello).
