ft [I'ER press association.] PICTURE THEATRE DAMAGED. Tauiuarunui, This Day. Shortly after ten o'clock 011 Saturday night, a lire broke out in the operating box of the Strand Pictures Iheatre. The operator was burnt about the hands in trying to suppress the flames, which rapidly spread. The audience was small, owing to a large number fiavng already left, and dispersed quietly. The fire brigade suppressed the outbreak. AI. the films were destroyed, and Ihe interior fittings and plant were badly damaged. The loss is covered by insurance. SWIMMING CIIAMPIONSIII 1' Blenheim, This Day. The swimming in connection with the New Zealand championships has commenced, and two handicap events were swam in the river on Saturday. in the mite race there were ten starters, and it was won by C. 11. Rich, of the East Christchureh Club, with -1o seconds start. Murrell, of AVellihgton, with 3 min 10 sees, <vas second. Rich won by 25 yards. The 220 yards' race was won by W. Sears, of Christchureh, AV. Rees, Auckland, being second. UNKNOWN MAN DROWNED. Dunedin, This Day. An unidentified swag man, about thirty years oi age, was drowned in Beck's Creek on Friday. The body has been recovered. DROWNED. Palmerston NThis Day. The police report that a mau named Kells was drowned yesterday afternoon at Broad and Ingram's fiuxmill, at Rangiotu. Kella was to have stalled work at the mill 011 Monday. He had lunch, and immediately went to the river to bathe, and was drowued. The body has not been recovered. NEW ZEALAND FRUIT PROSPECTS. Auckland, This Day. The annual conference of nurserymen is being held here. The president (Mr A. McDonald) began by reading a paper forecasting the probable effect of the Panama Canal opening. This was followed by a paper by Mr F. Bennett, in which the writer strongly advocated specialisation to give an impetus to exporting. Canneries and exporting were again being discussed, and while there was evidence that some practical good would result, it would take time before much could be done on these lines. An outside buyer had been offering as high as Ts per bushel cash for apples at port of shipment, but only a few growers had responded. A new market for well-grown fruit was being opened, and growers must confine their energies to a few lines, and study soil conditions. ' FOUND DROWNED. Wanganui, This Day. The body of a man was found on Kai lwi Beach, near Wanganui, yesterday, by two Wauganui residents. It lias not been identified. It had been in the water for a. considerable time. It was well-dressed, in a dark tweed suit, soft white shirt, black woollen flannel, celluloid collar, heavy drab socks, size eight boots that recently had been half soled. The pockets contained a £5 note and 2s 7d. The man probably was a farm hand, aged between 40 and 00, Oft (iin high, weight about ten and a-lialf stone. lie had thin features, brown hair, a brown beard about one inch long, and straight cut moustache. *fVo teeth are missing from the left upper jaw: otherwise the teeth are good. The police think the body drifted down the coast with the tide.
