« (I am told, writes ~T he Special Commissioner" in the London Sportsman, that good old Carbine retires from active service, and it is a matter of considerable interest that grandsons of his will be among the dehutants of next season. Out of the five varieties of potatoes tried by Mr E. Walker, oi Weraroa this year, Up-to-date easily surpassed all the others both in quality' and quantity. Emluy's up-to-date suffered from the blight the most severely. The tops of some of the others were attacked but the disease did not exteud to the tubers. Mrs Oalland, of Mout u, wa* a successful exhibitor at tl- Pa!merston Xprtli flower show on Saturday. She received ihe first award for twelve cactus da'di.;?, first for cosmos, seiv'i i for nasturtiums, second for three vaiieties of sweet peas and second tor verbenas and first for coreopsis. In the vegetable class Mi-; CnM.md was awarded first for .-..rr.dj Ihe benefit of a warm summer to maize is shown bv a crop at Mr F. ' Walker's, of Weraroa. Eight weeks ago it was only three or four inches above ground, of a. pale, unhealthy colour, and Mr Walker seriously considered the advisability of ploughing it under. Then the Avarm weather came along, and in the places where water did not lie in the earlier part of the season the maize is now eight feet high.

I Last night Levin "spoils" un- | derstood how Edinburgh felt after I Elodden. The reputation of Ho- ) rowhenua representative cricket J | was badly tarnished, the scalp of the Wednesday players hung m J | <he wigwam of the Para- | paraumu cricketers, and the Toms J. j Ferns, a gaud of great tonnage t , much sought after by bowlers, I ] was carried off to Palmorston. Ihe only bright spot was the one ( kept clean by'.Smith and Prin- | gle, who defeated Wilson and ! McMermott, of Porirua, at tennis, ! in two sets by 6--1 cadi time. In . :t points match they also defeated , Porirua by -30-16 . ! Additional proof that there is

profit in pigs is provided by the returns from these annuals secured by Mr F. Hotter, Kimborloy-road. Last year he sold pigs to the value of i>l77. The amount spent in

purchasing feed for them in ; ,<1 (lition to the skim milk from j herd of 00 cows, came to £:!<) a net profit of £1-"!<S th us making nearly .£•*> (o be added to the year ly return from each cow. ' Mi Hetter has found that it pays t( add a ration to the skim milk, and he allows one pint of peas ir each pig. per day. He keeps hvt breeding sows, a Berkshire-Devon cross and a .Devon-Berkshire This year a Berkshire boar is being used. One of the sows has produced 21 pigs this season. The first litter (ten) was sold some time ago and the porkers realised £2 each and the baconers £2 10s. An interesting point was raised in the Palniorston Magistrate Court in a claim by the HosipiaJ Board against W. \Yeekcs for £-J. U)s, as maintenance of his when the latter was in the hospital in LX97. The defence relied on the Statute of Limitations, ihe uebt being nearly 17 years old. Claimant, however, state ! that defendant's wife had pail .i'l.o in account more recently, an.'. ,';n! thereby revived the debt. Mr Moore, for the defence contended that this payment by the wife did not bind the husbaa.l. The board also contended tin) :h----debt was a statutory oiu-, inc. same as a mortgage iru'er 11itLand Transfer Act, and th-'r.-'oio had ~0 years' life. Ta ~i was reserved. At the Magistratc'sCourl, Palnierston North, on Tuesdav, before Mr J. YV. I'oynton, S.M., further legal argument was heard in (lie case in which .Moore and Beale, solicitors, Palmorston, claimed from "W. S. Between 200 and :JOO people attended the garden party at Air W. (i. Adkin's (Cheslyn Rise) .yesterday afternoon. The fune--110,1 w «s organised by the Ladies' (iuihl of Levin Methodist Church, and the guests were received byMrs Adkm and the president of the guild (Mrs Goldsmith). There were visitors from Shannon, Otaki, Ohau and Te Horo. The grounds were at their best at this season, and a scarlet flowering gum tree was much admired. The Rev. H. T. Harris was present, in improved health after his holiday. Several interesting competitions took place during the afternoon, the one that caused ihe most amusement being a ladies'.hat trimming competition, by men. This was won by Mr Byron Brown. A streets-naming competition is noted in another paragraph to-day. The assiduity of Mr and Mrs Adfcin and their daughters and sons in entertaining the large gathering was well seconded by the members of the Ladies' Guild, c t -nd e'.rrything connected with the function passed off pleasantly. Don't throw away last season's straw hat or Panama because it looks shabby and soiled. Get : packer of "Strobin" hat cleaner irom C. S.
