Meat (generally).—On account of the dull trade holders are accepting a small reduction in prices with a result that there is a better demand for mutton and lamb. Mutton: North Island 4gd per lb, ewes 4£d. Lamb: Other than Canterbury o£d per ib. Beef: The market is steady. New Zealand hinds 4£d, fores 4d. Supplies of American chilled beef are large with a good demand; hinds od per lb; fores 4|d. Butter. —The market is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker for New Zealand. The expected demand has not materialised. Danish: Market quiet; 120s to 12s per cwt. New Zealand : Market quiet 113s to 116s; Australian: in fair demand 109s to 112s; Argentine: Market quiet; 110s to 112s. Siberian: In fair demand; 110s to 112s. Cheese.—The market is steady and prices are well maintained, with a fair demand for New Zealand. The market is firm for Canadian owing to short supjply. Canadian white, 68s to 70s per cwt.; coloured 70s to 725. New Zealand white 63s to 645; coloured 65s to 665. Hemp.—Manila: The market is again easier. Fair current per ton £28; January to March shipments £28 ss. The output from Manila for the week was 23,000 bales. New Zealand: The market is quiet with a tendency in favour of buyers. Dominion offerings are very small. Good fair, per ton, £25 10s; fair £23 ss; January to March shipments —good fair £25 15s; fair £23 10s, May to July shipments about 5s more. Sisal: New York market is firm at last quotations. Tow.—There, is a better demand for tow. Nominal value for third grade, per ton, £10 15s to £11; other quotations are the same as before. The stock at theend of January was 1536 tons. Wool.—The market remains firm. A good business has been done in both tops and yarns, and spinners are much better employed. Hops.—The market is weaker and slightly lower, though a full supply has increased buying. English 130s to 160s per cwt; American 90s to 120s.
