Suggestions by Railwaymen

At the A.S.R.S. banquet on Saturday evening tlie General Manager of Railways (Mr E. JUL. Hiley), during a speech, outlined his proposals for encouraging railwaymen in all branches of the service to come forward with ideas. He asked that tiio railwaymen should assist the department with suggestions regarding the working and organisations of the railways, and in a few days' time he intended to circularise the A.S.R.S. members and other railway men with regard to such suggestions. He intended to set up a suggestions board —the idea was not his own but a ''crib" from the Great Western Company at Home —so that all the suggestions for improvements would be properly considered. He would like to say at once that he intended to see personally each suggestion that came in from the service. He would not say that he wouT.I n;,t turn a great many down, but those he thought might be useful he would send on to the suggestion board, which would be set up from officers representing the various branches of the service. Regard - ing patents, he intended to make some improvements. Railwaymen who had patents would in future be able to send them on to the suggestions board, which would treat them as confidential. (Applause). A scheme of monetary recognition for the suggestions sent in by the men would be drafted. Some might not be adoptable, but, at any rate, the action of the senders would be recognised at least by a letter of thanks from the Department.-— N.Z. Times.
