LEVIN v. Y.M.C.A

"We'll play-till dark!'' So said the Levin team at the con-

elusion of their first innings which cfosed for 4-3 against the W put up by their opponents. J' mav have been that they " J a second innings would enable them to retrieve their reputation at cricket, though a cynic- said that possibly tliey wished to get home quietly without being seen as answering the questions of inquisitive people as to the result of the game would have been painful. Y.M.C.A. batted first and when the first wicket fell for four Levin felt happy, and, if possible, more confident, and the Y.M.C.A. beehnie more cautious and dogged and the fall of the third wicket saw (50 on the score book. E. Pringle was the mainstay of his side; and by steady play saved it from defeat. In his fine score of liO there is only one hit for three, and in the whole Y.M.C.A. innings only three such hits. This speaks volumes for their careful play. Keys (8) was the second best scorer. The innings lasted about one and a half hours. Sloan got the best bowling aver-age--3 for 6. Judd took 3 for 8. Levin opened with I'oung and Brougliton and both went cheaply, two wickets falling for four. Judd and Sloan raised the hopes of Levin, Sloan hitting out freely and quickly made 22. He made one splendid hit for four into the western corner of the re- ' serve. Judd made 10 before he was caught by Howe. The other nine have no-.wish to be mentioned individually; they made seven runs between them; and "Jimmy" I added four, making the total 413. Howe took 5 wickets for 15. The wicket keeping on both sides was poor, little attention apparently being paid to this department of he game.- Clark and Pringle opened Y.M.C.A/s innings, and the latter had 17 against his name when he was caught. Clark took the lesson he had learned in the first innings to heart, and played cautiously—too cautiously sometimes—for 18. He hit a fine fourer and got another for the overthrow and two threes. The innings closed for 47. Horn took six for 16 and Young two lor 2. - The fielding of bdth sides was good, the Y.M.C.A. being the best at returning the ball. ' ! The Levin team caught out eight of their opponents; any chance missed was very difficult. It was late when Levin went to the wickets for their second innings, and at the drawing of stumps at 7 o'clock they had lost-6 wickets for 18 runs. Keys was in good form with the ball, and worked the hat trick, his average being four for four runs. Judd and Young were not out, and looked like making a good stand.
