The judge, before declaring the position of the leading bands, said that he had listened to a very fine contest. The same mistake had be-on made by every band in the Mendelssohn movement, which had been taken too slowly. He wished to impress on the bandsmen that tone and expression must, come first in music. DEATH OF A PIONEER. Dunedin, This Day. Henry Blackmore, one of Tuapeka's pioneer miners, died last night at \» aipori where he lived tor nearly fifty years. He wa's for some time manager of the Summer Law Flat Hydraulic Gold Mining Company. SHEEPFARMER .IXJ ('RED. Gisborne, This Day. Mr R. G. Black, sheepfarmer, at Pakowhai, whilst mustering his sheep, fell with his horse down a steep hillside and sustained serious injuries to his back. He now lies in a precarious condition. Black went out with his shepherd at 5 a.m. and arranged to meet the latter at 8 a.m. at a fixed point. The shepherd, arriving- at ' the appointed time, failed to find Black and made a search. Re, discovered him lying injured at . the foot of a cliff, his horse having evidently lost its footing on the razor-back ridge.
