The Labour Conference had a new experience. In the absence of the president, Mrs Dwyer presided at the sitting. Resolutions were carried in favour of a State sewing machine factory, a Government subsidy in connection with the scheme for higher education of the workers, that the copyright of all books and manuscripts published in the Commonwealth be reserved to the author without registration, that marriage or cohabitation of whites with coloured aliens be prohibited.
It was decided to send forward a resolution in favour of the prohibition of the manufacture and importation for sale of cigarettes throughout the Commonwealth, also a resolution that at the next election a plebiscite be taken on the question of abolition of the importation, manufacture, and distribution of alcoholic beverages, to the annual Conference of the AulTralian Labour League. HOT WEATHER. The heat wave continues over the greater part of the Commonwealth. Many very high registers are recorded at Bourk'e. The thermometer reached 119. MONEY WANTED. The Olympic Games Australasian Committee issues to-day an appeal to the public to contribute towards the proposed fund of £10,000 required to train and equip the team. It is expected that the number will approximately be 60, representing all branches of athletics. Already £348 has been promised, and it is hoped that the Cfovernment will again contribute. The amateur aspect of the matter is to be strictly preserved in training competitors. w—■— "
