The Labour Conference on the motion of Mrs Leary, by 52 to 20 votes, appointed a deputation to wait <on the Government to urge a fuller -recognition ol women's rights. The debate was exfularating at times; also exciting. Several male delegates opposed the motion and their speeches were punctuated with shrill female, shouts. The mover claimed that Labour waS ill power solely on account of the women's support. The women were not in the Labour movement for fun, but to improve their position'. There was a movement to send some more members to the Legislative Council, why not send women 'i They demanded recognition, and it was an insult and humiliating to -be treated as they were now. She warned the Conference that if things were not altered there would be a split in the Labour ranks as serious as that which existed in Victoria. STATE SOCIALISM. The Minister for 'Justice announced that the Government is starting a State bakery to supply the Government institutions with bread. With the steadily increasing cost of living the Government found itself having to pay , more each year for the upkeep of these institutions, and the question of'keeping down the cost was fast becoming an acute one. The for bread this year showed an increase of 28 per cent compared with those of last ye*r. He was convinced that there was no real justification for this immense increase, and to support, his contention that a ring 'existed among the bakers, he stated that the Government refused "to accept the lowest tenders, and called for fresh ones which showed a large drop, the bakers apparently having guessed that inquiries were on foot to start a Government establishment. After careful consideration the Government had purchased the up-to-date bakery of Boss and Sons. The Government would start baking for their own institutions this month and expected to produce bread at Id per lb.
