The Chronicle PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY, 1914. FOXTON WHARF.

J.n the improvement of I'uxton Harbour and the enlargement of lis nailing facilities Levin and district has a great deal to gain. iiie natural sequence to improved shipping facilities at Eoxton would be an improved roadway iroin that port to Levin. On a belter roadway than the present one motor waggons could bo run quickly and profitably, making a means of extra employment for people residing in Levin and district, and also saving the citizens and settlers payment of the sixty miles railway haulage rate from Wellington to Levin. For these and various other reasons Levin stands to benefit considerably from the development of Foxton and the citizens and settlers of these parts should keep their mental vision clear on this point, and not be misled by alarmist fears of being cast in heavy ultimate liabilities. At worst, the town of Levin would be asked to pay a sum of some £50 per annum towards the upkeep of the port; and what that sum would amount to per capita can be ascertained by anyone with a little spare time and a turn for figuring. Having regard to the money-earning capacity of the port, and the expanding nature of the settlements along this coast, the probability is that not one penny piece of the guarantee ever will be called up. Having regard to all the case, we are highly pleased to see tli.e movement for acquiring the wharf from the Government taking more definite shape, and trust to see the negotiations completed before ailother rise in the selling price of • lie wharf is decided upon as a result of its increased earning capaoitv. Some informative and interesting details concerning the general case were put before the Hon. V. M. IV Fisher, Minister for .Marine, during his visit to Foxton this week. Some extracts from the speeches delivered on that occasion were printed in yesterday's Chronicle, and the points made by the speakers deserve careful consideration.
