A smoke concert was given to Air Dave Jievan in the Manakau Hotel on Friday uig-ht. A hu'ge and representative gathering Wyjl'e there with Major Tatuiii as ehai'rjnaii. The following toasts wej'e honoured : "The Xing," Air Tatuiu: "The. Government/' . Mr Burnell; "Our Guest," Air Tatuni. Ln proposing the toast '"Our Guest," Mr Tatuin presented Air Bevan with a gold sovereign case, as a slight token of Air Bevan's conduct in going to Wellington as a special constable during the recent strike. Mr Bevan feelingly responded. Other toasts honoured wore: "'The Ladies," Air Ktupples; "Labour," Mr L. Atkins; "The Dairyiug Industry," Air G. Silßrey; "The Chairman," ALr A. Atkins. A letter was read from the Hon. Air llerdunin regretting his inability lo all tend. ])uring the evening Air Burnell proposed a resolution which was carried unanimously, congratulating the Goverment on the action taken to preserve law and order during the recent strike, and the protection given to the best interests of the general public and the producers of the dominion, expressing their continued, confidence in the present Administration. During the evening recitations were given by Alessrs Tatuin and Quayle, and two songs by Air-1). Bevan and one by Mr Tarake. An enjoyable evening , was finished up by all rising and singing "Auld Lang Syne."
