I'roin the Duniop Itubber Company oi Australasia for tlic weekiug eudiug January 1914.
The feature of the test was undoubtedly tke fine petrol uiiletiycs recorded, and the everyday motorist will find it hard to realise that the figures are correct, but then he must remember that every advantage was taken of all descents 'to coast. The mileage figures of the leading cars with weight of cars in parenthesis are worth citing:—A. Jewell (12h.p. Dixi (weight of car and passenger in lbs., 37,2 miles per gallon; J. Maillard, 12 h.p. liichard Brazier (-J6;ißlbs), 3.1.0 m.y.g; U. F. Hill 12h.p. Talbot (35(J(ilbs) '61 m.p.g.;' A. V. Turner 25 h.p. Benz (45001b5) 23.9 in.p.g. The greatest mileage to the gallon was that recorded by l< 1 . 11. Crouch whose Jifetle Metz averaged the remarkable distance of 51| miles per gallon, but tlie light weight of this run-about precluded it from figuring high up in tinpetrol consumption test, which was decided on ton mileage. The test was undoubtedly a severe one for both cars and contestants, particularly on account of the hot weather conditions, but it is unlikely that this annual contest will be again held in mid-summer. One important development that will evolve out of the trial just concluded is the dividing of competitors in future Sydney-Melbourne contests into two classes, viz., a section for private car owners and an qpon section. At present the bona fide private car owner has little chance of success when competing, against crack trade drivers.
