EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our President llepresentative).

AVATEIt'AVOIIKS SCHEME. A meeting of those interested in the waterworks scheme was held at the Mechanics' Institute at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Mr Venn presided and there also were present: Messrs Lind, AV. H. Gunning, It. Stansell, Jr., Moynihan, Venn, G. Stephenson, E. J. Judd, S. AV. Carter. The chairman explained the object of the meeting. He thought ■stioii of the ±<'oxton Bor_ ncil was a fairly reasonMr Lind had been over and believed he could ome improvement that re 60 chains in the route by Winging the main along Stout street.

Mr Lind read a letter from the Foxton Borough Council forwarding the resolutions which have been already published. He then moved "That this committee call a public meeting and unanimously recommend the ratepayers of Shannon to accept the first resolution of the Foxton Borough Council."

Some discussion took place as to the proposed route. Mr Judd seconded Mr Lind's 'resolution. He thought'that the Foxton Council had met the Shannon people veiy fairly. Mr Carter thought that if the ratepayers of Shannon wanted the water supply they would never get better terms, v. 1 Mr Stephenson tliought that the offer was almost too good. He doubted if the Foxton ratepayers would vote for the scheme. Mr Easter thought that Foxton needed a -water supply much more than Shannon.

It was resolved that a public meeting be called for the purpose in the Druids' hall on a date to be advertised.

Mr Lind mentioned that he had received a letter from Mr L. Daroiix, of Wellington, offering a site for qatchment area.

It was suggested that the Levin Council be written to for information as to charges for the supply to slaughter houses, etc. Mr Gunning said that the engineer had stated there , was enough water to supply tjie daily wants of 70,000 people.

After some further discussioi.\ the meeting adjourned.
