A. & P. Show

| ihe llorowhenua A. and P. i Association was favoured by uii I ideal summers day tor the show J held yesterday. J liougli the ! siiow was hardly up that of last year, it is no reason why anyone ; should be pessimistic about it. ; 'I'lie most notabie yap 111 the Jive I stock section was among the pigs, ; where the absence o:f the exhibits , from the Porirua Mental liospiJ taJ was noticeable. if the pur- ! pose of a show is simply to pro- ! vide prizes for the farmers of the ' district, their absence does not j matter, but if the show is to have !an educational value the non- | appearance of the animals from j Porirua is a distinct loss. The | dairy classes were good, but the lat stock were not up to last year's standard, and the same falling oil' aJso took place among the horses. Speaking generally, ttie judges were disappointed in both these sections. The sheep pens were liJled and held some hue exhibits. In lat fambs and fat sheep, Hill. J. Pichards scorcd heavily, getting lour firsts in each section, and Messrs (iardner and Davies (ivoputaroa) got two firsts each. In pigs, Mi' -I. C. .Neil! secured pride of place with four firsts, and Mr T. L. Walker got one first with a Berkshire sow. The I leat lierlea horses took a lot of prizes in that section, scoring well in the compel il ions. I n fat eaftle Mr I'. A. Oillies look everything. In the si ml slock, Weggery Uros. and Mr I), (iardner got three firsts, two seconds and one third each, and Mi' -1. Kelthe!! also did very well in this class. The Hoys' Hands (brass and pipe) from the Training Farm, Weraroa, by permission of' the Manager. Major Biirlinson. played select ions on the lawn during llk a I'lcriioon . under the baton of lneiilenanf Herd. Mi- .1. K ebbe! I. the l'resident of the Associafion. extended, on be]ia! I of lhaf body, a hearty welcome fo 111 e Hon. R. 11. Rhodes, who. in Ihe absence o|' (he Hon. Mr came up I'rom Wel-ling-ion lo open file show. ITe read fhe following telegram from Mr Massey fo the secretary. Mr R. !). Wallace; '"Replying to vouy letter ol' Ihe MHIt inst. Much regret that if i< not possible for me to he present at the annual show 10-morrow owing to engage-

i ments in AVellington. The Hon. | ■ Rhodes will represent the j -Ministry at the function, and I : I rust that, the show will be a j highly successful one. AV. F. I Massey. He had also received a telegram from Mr B. R. Gardener, the secretary, who is at present ill in Palmerston : "Congratulations. Fine weather. Sorry cannot he present. Improving. B. Gardener." ■Mr Rhodes thanked (lie President lor the yei-y hearty welcome, fie had received the following letter from Air Massey: "In connection with your visit to Levin tomorrow. 1 shall be glad if you will kindly convey to the members of the Horowhenua A. and P. Association my thanks for their invitation to the annual show. U liile it would have given me great pleasure to have been present at the show, I regret that the slate of my health, and engagements in Wellington, render it nnpossible for me to go to Levin on Wednesday. At the same time will yon kindly express to Hie Association my good wishes W the show. W. F. Masscv." Continuing, the Hon. Mr Rhodes stated 'that the Prime Minister took a keen interest in the weh iare of the farmers, and the farmers had a man at the head of affairs who looked after their in tercsts. Everything pointed to <i favourable season for the men on the land. The fanners are now and at the next general election will make i heniselvos felt as they have never been felt before. Matters are '' 11 u ' U P o'l'iule in the London markets, and Sir William llall•Jones says that there is a. prospect of opening a market for our pioducts in I* ranee. As proof oJ the Hon. Mr Massey \s interest in the district, he uuglit mention that twenty-six settlers had been placed on portion of the Heatherlet Estate resumed by the Government. The Hon. Mr Massey was also keeping in view the establishment of workers' settlements, and with that object in view had recently acquired about o'j acres at AVillowbridge, in eolith Canterbury. This would he cut uj) into small sections, and one of these, together with the house thereon, will cost about .'.(iilO. The Government was continuing the good work of its predecessors, and the AVeraroa ''tale harm, and others throughout the country, were being maintained. He was extremely sorry lo hear of the illness of the secretary, and hoped that his complete recovery would soon take place, and thai he would long Be spared to carry out his duties as secretary of the Association.
