The President of the Conference repeated his instructions to the door keeper and' asked the gentlemen who had secured admittance through temporary neglect to leave. Thereupon Mr llobert Patten, Liberal Federal member for The Hume, and Mr T. Campbell, left tlie hall. After tins every newcomer was closely questioned as to his bona tides as a friend of labour. Discussing the proposed abolition of the tipper House, Mr Laniond commented severely upon the rumours that the Gl oveiniment had decided to make a personal batch of appointments to the Tipper House —a matter in which the conference had every right to asserts its authority, he said. Eighteen appointments were necessary to swamp the Upper House :md secure a certain majority for ti bill to bring about its abolition. A committee was appointed to enquire into the claims of various sections.
