Manakau Notes
{Bγ our Resident Representative)
JNew Year passed oft very quietly here. Uarol singers were very busy until morning. One aniusiug incident happened , the carol singers were found singing in iront of an empty nouse and could not understand why the owner (who is a good sport) would not come out. He was in Wellington. Mr Quayle has sold his bootshop to a Mr Bell. Manakau has been going without replace soles for the last few months. Mr Ransh'eld had his collarbone broken, through a horse he was driving bolting and throwing him out of a cart. A. dance was held after the piclure display on I'riday night. Dancing was indulged in until 3'oclock on Saturday morning. The Misses Cook gave a tine exhibition of the sailor's hornpipe. The cheese factory consigned over ten tons (160 crates) of cheese to Wellington on Friday. Haymaking is now in full swing; operations are g'oing on on almost every farm. I hear that a young- man near Manakau crawled Di. miles last week, while weeding onions. It seems a kneesy way of making a living, but "weed" rather earn ours at milking.
