E. V. Riddiford's Kilrain won the Manawatu Cup yesterday. Jargon Avon the Christmas Handicap at Ncav Plymouth, Byron the County Cup at Carterton, Sir •Solo the Auckland Cup and Merius the Otag'O Handicap. Although the weather was threatening the rain held oil" and the crowd that thronged ; the streets and shops on Chrisinas Eve had no cause to complain. It was a happy, good-humoured crowd bent on enjoying the evening to the utmost, and except for a squabble between a couple of Maoris nothing occurred to Avhich anybody could take exception. The juveniles, Avith squeakers, trumpets, crackers, whistles, etc. provided the noise necessary on a Christinas Eve. The shops did a good trade, especially the fruit and toy shops. At eleven the croAvd started to thin out and at 2. 10 a.m. the last motor car started homewards. The only sounds being the crowing of the cocks and the Christmas carols played by the band in side streets. A feAv minutes lifter the special train which left Wellington at 12 passed through Avith. a large number of passengers on board. The chancel and font of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Levin, Avere prettily decorated for the Christmas festival by the ladies of the parish: There ,were two celebrations of Holy Communion at eight and eleven o'clock. At the latter service the nave of the church was quite full. There Avere ninety communicants at the above tAvo services, which number is said to be »n record for Christmas. There Avas a fair congregation for Evensong, after which four carols were sung.
