"UNSAFE."

AiWTHEIt ACCIDENT AT THE KIMBEKLEY HO AD FOltD. A 1 serious accident Avas narrowly averted at about 4.80 on Priday afternoon. Mr Sheargold, of Ohau, attempted to cross the Ohau river at the top of Kiinberley road, and when about half way over the main stream his mare was carried off her legs by the flood. She managed to right herself, but again went down, with only her head above water. Mr Sheargold was just in the act of cutting the harness away when the mare righted nerself once more, and managed to get to an island. Just then Mr H. Horrobin, who had had to ford'ihe swift current, came and gave Mr Sheargold a helping hand. There was still a stretch of deep and swift water to be crossed, and the mare took it, but only to be washed off her legs again. This time cart and all were turned turtle, and washed down the river for about a hundred yards. Mr Sheargold did not expect to see hi& horse alive again, but Mr.Horrobin and he ran along the bank, and, seeing the mare in more shallow water, waded out and managed to grab her bridle and so get her out, which was a marvel considering the buffeting she got. It was a marvellous escape and a wonder both life and property were not lost. ' This accident is another striking proof of the necessity for a bridge over the Ohau river at this spot, it being one of the most dangerous crossings. Only a short time back Mr W. Horrobin lost a valuable horse and cart through, being washed doAvn the river at this ford, and yet nothing has been done with regard to getting a bridge over. A resident of the district has written to The Chronicle commenting that some human life has been lost, then perhaps the council will move; but it is better to lock the door of the stable before.the horse is than afterwards."
