Second Edition The Strike
PRESENTATIONS AT AUCR* LAND. [PER ritESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, This Day. Over one thousand special constables were entertained at the Town Hall last nighf by the Citizens' Defence Committee, the Mayor presiding. Major Lusk, who took a prominent part in organising the "specials," was presented with an illuminated address, amidst prolonged applause. A presentation was also made to the officers of the "specials," and the farmers and their wives cheered again and again. The announcement that the seamen had declared the strike oft , provoked another storm of applause and cheering.
AUSTRALIAN STEAMERS RESUMING. [electric telegraph, copyright.] [per press association.] (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) Sydney, This Day. Following the declaration that the Australian strike is oft', the Huddart-Parker Company has completed arrangements for the reeommission of their New Zealand steamers. Mr Massey's reply to Mr Holman's strike cable is now published. It informed Mr Holinan that with the exception of the coal miners and seamen, work was being carried on almost as usual. Some thousands of men had joined the Arbitration Unions, and the Government could not agree that.the position of such unions, should be referred to any tribunal other than the Arbitration Court, and then only when a breach of "the act or of an agreement took place. He trusted that Mr Holman would do everything possible to remove the hindrances to commerce between New South Wales and New Zealand.
