EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative). Constable Murray, who had a nasty spill oil 1 his horse and collided with a .stump last week, is recovering, and will soon be able to resume duty. Mr Coy has disposed of his to Mr Galloway, of Paliatauui. BOWLING AND TENNIS. The wet weather militated against bowling ;,nd tennis on \\ ednesdav afternoon, but there was a good muster oi players on both green and court. 'Several visitors from Foxton were on the tennis court, and a match was played between Foxton and Shannon. It- was a return match to that which was played at Foxton about a month ago. Both teams were ably representative of their respective (dubs, and some hardfought struggles took place, Foxton eventually winning by 81 sets to GT. Following are the scorers: Men's Singles. Hennessey beat Dunckley, 8— G; Jackson beat Taylor, '8 5; McHattie beat Caiman, 8- 5: Bovis beat Phillips, 8—(J; Gabites beat Bradley, B—7. Men's Doubles. Hennessey and Jackson beat Dunckley and Taylor, 8—0: McHattie and Phillips beat 'Bovis and Colnian, 8—o; Gabitcs and luirrie beat Russell and Bradlev, 8-7. * Ladies' Singles. Mrs Picket beat Miss Waklyn, Mi'* Doidge beat Miss McHardie, (j 5; Mrs Linsell beat Miss Bryant, G—o. Ladies' Doubles. Miss Waklyn and Miss McHardie_ beat Mrs Pickett and Mrs Doidge, 8— G. On the bowling green Venn and Lind (skip) played Bilderbeck and E. Butts (skip).- Butts scoring Hi to Lind's 10. Bromley, Clayton, Knowles and Roach (skip), 25, defeated liensman (2), Fargiier and Gunning (skip), 12. Mrs Knowles and Mrs Cook provided afternoon teo. A pleasing function took place at the Shannon public school on Thursday afternoon, on the occasion of the breaking up for the Christmas holidays. Mr Voysey, on behalf of the teachers and scholars, referred to the great loss the school had sustained through Miss Steele leaving. Miss Carter, on behalf of the scholars, presented Miss Steele with a handsome set of silver tea spoons, and bread fork as a farewell gift. Miss Steel thanked the scholars very much for their handsome present. An accident happened to the engin e used a I the Gillandia Hall (used for driving the picture showing apparatus) on Thursday morning. (Jne of the wheels came (ill and disabled the whole machine. A new machine will shortly arrive, and will be placed in position immediately. /During the heavy gale on Tuesday night, a brick wall, which almost had been completed, was blown down near to Mr Jenkin's shop on Plimmer Terrace. A large number of our local sprinters have entered for the sports in the Wairarapa oil Boxing Day. Judging by the handicaps which are just out, some good bags ought to be brought back to Shannon. On Tuesday evening a meeting of the Yen Bede's parishioners was held in the church.- The licv. G. Palmer presided, and explained that the meeting was called to consider the envelope system, which it was considered advisable to adopt at the beginning of the new year. Cards for the purpose indicating the amount of contributions were distributed.
