\ KI. IX'T Rlc TEI/KGlUl'll, COPYRIGHT.] [I'lvlt I'IIESS ASSOCIATION.! TEKRJISLE MINE TRAGEDY. New York, Dec. 17. Kye-witnesses describe the Vulcan mine explosion in Colorado as equal to a volcanic eruption. Flame and smoke slfo't from the mine's mouth; the whole mountain rocked from the detonation which was like a thousand cannon shots. Forty were working in the mine and two were rescued. Victims were married. The bodies recovered were frightfully mangled. Wives and children crowded (lie mine mouth, hysterically giving way to their gnef. Pathetic scenes continued hour after hour. Father Carrigan penetrated the mine; ahead of the .rescuers, at the imminent risk of his life, in order to accord the Church rites to any dying persons. (llcceivcd 'Phis Day, 9 a.m.) THE BOER MEMORIAL. Bloenifontien, Dec. 17. Twenty thousand Boers standing on the surrounding kopjes witnessed the unveiling of the 115-feet memorial, adjoining the Capetown-Kimberley main line. One hundred maidens, seated in waggons draped with purple, headed the procession, and 11.0 mounted burghers fired the final salute. Ex-President. Steyn, now a pathetic figure, and broken in health, said the memorial was not erected as an eternal reproach, but as a reminder of the suffering, self-Sacrifice, and patriot ism of the Boer women. General Bolha said he knew if required a great deal of restraint to banish feelings of bitterness, but if was their dutv not to feel ha(red. General De Wot aroused great enthusiasm, saying: "To forgive is a command; but forget, I never can, nor will." Queen Willieliiiina sent a wreath. Mrs Steyn represented Miss riohhouse, who was prevented from unveiling the memorial by illness. The latter circulated a speech, condemning the wealthy financiers, blundering politicians, and bad generals, who warred upon weaklings and babies. The Cape Argus protests against the revival of Miss Hobhouse's wanton calumnies.
