The apparatus at the mill was unable to cope with the outbreak, anu the Dargaville brigade engine was summoned. It was a nine-mile journey to the mill, and arrived too late to do any good, the fire having too great a hold on the building. The brigade saved .SO,OOO worth of timber. The manager states that all was safe at 5.10, but five minutes later the alarm was given. His estimate of the loss is .£40,000. All the machinery and buildings are totally destroyed. A large amount of the timber saved will sell as third class. The fire is still smouldering, but there is 110 danger.
